Geneva County Residents Seek Resolution for Dry Wells
(Geneva County, AL)--Local and State Officials met on Thursday to figure out a way to restore water to Piney Grove residents. More than private 15 wells have gone dry over the past few weeks, leaving many residents wondering where to turn.
Samson Mayor Clay King is one of the people working with local senators and representatives to address this issue at the state Level. King's plan is to request a $700,000 emergency grant from the state so the city can extent waterlines into that part of Geneva County.
As a quick fix, the city is considering building a temporary reservoir until the issue can be resolved.
"We are hoping we will receive the funding that we need, and if so, this would ensure these people would always have access to water," King said.
However, many people believe King's idea only solves part of the problem. Many Piney Grove residents believe a recent installation unregulated irrigation systems caused their wells to dry up, but King says it's not in his authority to regulate.
"Right now, Alabama does not have regulations on private wells," King said. "If people want that to change, then they have to go through the state and make their opinion known," he said.
If the emergency grant is approved, the monthly water bill would cost Piney Grove residents around $15. Those residents would also be allowed to keep their current wells.
