MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The tradition of Alabama voters deciding whether to cast ballots in the Democratic primary or the Republican primary could come to an end in the 2014 elections for governor and the Legislature.

The State Republican Executive Committee has voted to back legislation that would require Alabama voters to register by party. Then registered Republicans would vote in the Republican primary and registered Democrats would vote in the Democratic primary.

Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead says there is growing sentiment among party leaders that Republicans should decide who the party's nominees should be.

The Democratic leaders in the Legislature, Sen. Roger Bedford and Rep. Craig Ford, say they will oppose it because voters don't like labeling themselves.
