GA Cotton Harvest Off to Late Start

VIENNA, Ga. (AP) -- Farmers in middle Georgia say an unusually wet and cool summer has delayed their cotton harvesting period.

Dooly County farmer Eddie Green says he hasn't started harvesting any of his 320 acres of cotton and this year's harvesting period will get off to its latest start in 20 years.

According to a report by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the rain over the summer slowed the cotton's development and colder than normal weather hindered its growth.

Alice Hudson says she and her husband typically plant at least 300 acres of cotton a year but this year's conditions led them to planting soybeans instead.
