Funds for Summer Cooling Assistance Gone
DOTHAN, AL--June Maloy works as the Executive Director at the HRDC. She says lately phones are ringing off the hook for assistance.
"There is a really great need right now, there's a lot of people who are out of work," said Maloy.
But even with so many people in need, the department can only give out what it has within a certain time period.
There are two funding periods a year. One in the summer and one in the winter.
"The summer cooling period runs from June 1st to September 30th and the winter runs from October 1st to May 30th," added Maloy.
Maloy says summer funding is gone.
"We're at the end of our funding period and we have spent down to $30,000 or so and we have all the appoints made that's going to cover that money."
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs awarded the HRDC $700,000 for the summer cooling period.
That money was divided among 5 counties based on the poverty level.
"On regular LIHEAP cooling we've helped 1468 people and on crisis we've helped 683 people," explained Maloy.
Grant money for the winter heating period hasn't come in yet.
Maloy says once it's in, they'll let the communities know and began accepting appointments.
Officials say they may soon require applicants who receive the funds to attend budget classes.
