Four Arrested in Theft from Ala. Education Board

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Sheriff's officials in Jefferson County say four people have been charged with stealing more than $400,000 from the Birmingham Board of Education.

Authorities say an investigation led them to arresting 50-year-old Maury Pettway, 52-year-old Marcellous Blackmon and 47-year-old Rodney Everson on charges of theft and using a public position for personal gain. Sheriff's Spokesman Randy Christian says the three worked in the Board of Education Transportation Division and created fake invoices for car parts and maintenance at a shop one of them owned.

Authorities also arrested 40-year-old Kimberly Watson on theft charges. Bond for Watson is set at $30,000. Bond for Everson and Blackmon has been set at $40,000 and bond for Pettway has been set at $60,000.

It was unclear Thursday if the four had lawyers.
