Former Mayoral Candidate Claims Arrest Unjust

Newton, AL - A former candidate for mayor in Newton claims his arrest was unjust.

Derrill Speller, 58, was arrested last Thursday and charged with nine misdemeanor charges.

These include reckless endangerment, harassment, and obstruction of a government operation.

Speller says he was trying to tell the Newton Police chief the town’s water department employees were illegally riding a 4-wheeler on a roadway.

Speller says he’s done no wrong.

“That is negative. That is negative. I never tried to push anyone off any guardrail. If you would check, there was no one harmed. But I did pull in front of them. I got way ahead of them and pulled in front of them, and I asked Chief Beistline to please let me issue a UTC. “

Speller plans to fight his charges in court.
