ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Rick Scott is pointing to Florida's improved economy as Republicans look past losses in November and ahead toward the next election.
Scott, who will seek his second term in 2014, told party activists Saturday that unemployment has dropped and the housing market has improved since he took office.
Scott said he has made the state more business friendly by lowering taxes and getting rid of regulations.
Party activists also re-elected Lenny Curry as the state GOP chairman.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- A central Florida woman and her 9-year-old son have been shot outside a central Florida day care.
Police responded to shots fired outside the Tiny Tots Child Care Center in Kissimmee around 7 a.m. Saturday morning and found the 32-year-old victim and her son. Both had been shot in the leg.
Kissimmee Police spokeswoman Stacie Miller said the victims were sitting in their car waiting for the day care to open when a dark colored vehicle drove by and fired three shots. A few other families were also waiting in their cars but were not injured.
Miller said it's unclear if the victims were targeted or if the shooting was random. They were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
No suspects are in custody.

PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities have charged a handyman with killing a 35-year-old Port Richey woman in her home.
The Pasco Sheriff's Office said Kelly Bennett was killed sometime after midnight Saturday by "homicidal violence." Her son came home to find his mother's body in the living room and called police. Authorities did not say how she died.
Authorities were also investigating reports of a white male acting suspiciously while walking down a road near Bennett's home around that time. Forty year-old Steven Clairmont Jr. was charged with first degree murder after investigators said they connected him to the crime scene. Deputies did not release that evidence.
Pasco officials said Clairmont had been living at Bennett's home for about three weeks working as a handyman. A motive was not given.

PALM COAST, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities have identified the three people killed after a small plane crashed into a house while trying to land at a central Florida airport. Florida Highway Patrol officials identified the victims Saturday as 57-year-old Michael Anders, of Albany, Ky., 59-year-old Duane Shaw, of Albany, Ky. and 42-year-old Charissee Peoples, of Indianapolis.
