TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Law enforcement agencies across Florida are holding crackdowns to stop impaired driving.
A Florida Department of Transportation press release says officers "will be aggressively looking" for drunk drivers during the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" crackdowns. The special enforcement crackdown will run from Wednesday through January 1.
FDOT Chief Safety Officer Lora Hollingsworth says the goal is to ensure everyone enjoys a safe holiday season while out on the road. That's why drivers caught drinking and driving impaired will not be tolerated. "No warnings. No excuses."
Authorities say there were 920 alcohol-related or suspected fatalities in 2011 that resulted from car crashes. Nationally, in December, approximately 30 percent of all fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes involve alcohol-impaired drivers.
