MIAMI (AP) -- A coalition of groups supporting Florida's constitutional prohibition on same-sex marriage says a lawsuit challenging the ban threatens the principle of one person, one vote.
The groups including the Christian Family Coalition and Florida Democratic League said Friday the lawsuit filed by six gay couples should be withdrawn or dismissed by a judge. The groups say the decision by Florida voters in 2008 to approve the same-sex marriage ban amendment should be respected.
The lawsuit filed last month in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court contends the prohibition is an unconstitutional violation of guarantees of equal treatment and due process. Gay marriage bans have been struck down by judges in other states.
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi's office has not yet filed a legal response to the lawsuit.
