TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Rick Scott is hoping for a little good news when the state announces its August unemployment numbers.

It's been a rough week for the first-term Republican governor, who came into office on a promise of creating 700,000 new jobs.

Scott was jolted by news earlier in the week that American Airlines was eliminating 1,400 jobs in Florida. He was also challenged by a comment from a state economist that Florida's improved job numbers in recent months has had more to do with folks leaving the work force than it did creating new jobs.

The Florida's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 8.8 percent in July after several months of improvement. Scott is among thousands who are hoping for improved numbers Friday.
