First Case of West Nile

A middle-aged Savannah man who became infected with West Nile virus spent four days at Candler Hospital.

Roth told The Savannah Morning News that the patient is expected to fully recover from the mosquito-borne disease, though it may take time.

Roth said blood tests by a diagnostic lab confirmed the infection.

Officials from the Coastal Health District and the Chatham County Health Department said Friday that no West Nile cases have been reported to them.

Chatham County had 10 confirmed cases of the virus last year.

The infection would not necessarily surprise health officials.

Authorities have said mosquitoes in parts of the county have tested positive this year for the virus.
