(Chipley, FL; March 12, 2014)— A approximately 9 p.m., Tuesday, March 12th, Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Holmes County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a suspicious male walking along Hwy 90, near the Washington/Holmes County line, holding what appeared to be a rifle.
Officers with Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and observed a man fitting the description walking with the weapon in his hand. When officers passed the male suspect, he raised and pointed a weapon at officers who took evasive action and called for additional units to assist. The male then fled into a wooded area.
Additional officers responded to assist, including officers from both Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and Bonifay Police Department. After numerous requests for the suspect to surrender to officers, the suspect proceeded to leave the woods, advancing with his weapon pointed at officers.
There were several additional attempts to have the suspect surrender and drop his weapon. The suspect continued to advance and shots were fired by officers. EMS pronounced the suspect dead on scene.
FDLE, with their assisting crime lab team, were immediately contacted and are the lead on the investigation at this time. Any additional inquiries are to be directed to their agency.
