Family & Friends say Goodbye to Local WWII Hero

Friends, family and the community said their final goodbyes to a local World War two hero Friday.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Ira Weatherly Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Dothan last week.

Weatherly's Funeral service was held at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel.

On August 6th, 1945, Weatherly co-piloted his B-29 airplane in a weather reconnaissance mission, before the Hiroshima Bombing Mission.

"Very quite man not a man who would brag about his accomplishments, a lot of those accomplishments, his war history I wasn't even aware of until I was grown because he didn't really like to talk about it but in his last few years he talked about it a lot and I was able to learn about his historical contributions," said Ira Weatherly's youngest daughter Linda Weatherly Dean.

After 25 years of service, Weatherly retired from the military and became a chief test pilot with Hayes Aircraft in Dothan.

He was 90 years old.
