Things may look a little different on North Foster Street.

The barriers that once blocked part of the sidewalk are now gone, leaving ample space to view the new improvements to the building that collapsed in February.

"I think everything's fine about the building that collapsed, and the building we own next to it is in great structural condition and the report came back real good," said Dothan Downtown Redevelopment Authority Chairman Jimmy Grant.

Steel beams were added to support the 100-year old building to keep it from swaying.

"We made it where you can get in there when a tornado comes and be safe," said Grant.

“The fire department, all of the building inspectors, engineering and planning and once everyone has approved the inspections we'll go ahead and issue a certificate of occupancy," said Building Official for the City of Dothan Craig Scurlock.

City of Dothan building Inspector Craig Scurlock says inspections are moving fast and it should be completed within 2-months at the latest.

The DDRA still has 2-buildings available. In order to attract potential investors the group made safety its top priority.

"Other buildings downtown have been looked at we're working with the DDRA on those and see if we can get some more business downtown," said Scurlock.

The group is also reviewing its policy on who shows buildings to interested parties.

"Any member of the Dothan Downtown Redevelopment Authority can show those buildings and talk to people about them," said Grant.

Others not associated with the group can only show the space and not discuss price or specifics.

And the DDRA is still moving forward with their street scaping plans.

“We've been working on Oates Street and trying to get those dilapidated buildings and we're getting close to that," said Grant.

Part of the DDRA’s street scaping plan includes commissioning a mural to be painted on a building along Main Street.
