TAMARAC, Fla. (AP) -- A toddler has drowned after sinking underwater in a backyard swimming pool in South Florida.

Broward County Sheriff's deputies said 23-month-old Johnny Davoer and his family were visiting a friend in Tamarac on Saturday. The child was playing in the shallow end of the pool just a few feet away from where the adults were sitting.

Another family member came outside and asked where the child was. That's when they saw Johnny at the bottom of the pool. Family members jumped in and pulled him out of the water. It's unclear how long he was under.

A deputy performed CPR, but the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
