FL Gov. Meeting with Oyster Harvesters

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Governor Rick Scott is meeting with workers in the hard-hit oyster industry.

Scott is scheduled to sit down with Franklin County residents at a local fire station.

He has already requested federal assistance for oyster harvesting areas, including Apalachicola Bay. But so far federal authorities have not acted on the request.

Drought and a lack of enough fresh water coming down the Apalachicola River are impacting oysters in the bay.

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam has already warned that it looks there may be not be a sustained commercial harvest of oysters this year.

Franklin County officials have estimated that the problems could affect as many as 2,500 jobs in the area.
