Ex-State Worker Sentenced in Embezzlement

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The Alabama Attorney General says a former Department of Rehabilitative Services employee has been sentenced in an embezzlement scheme.

In a statement Wednesday, state Attorney General Luther Strange said 39-year-old Erica Fredrose Johnson was convicted of stealing more than $339,300 from the department's Birmingham office.

Johnson worked as the department's fund custodian from 2005 until she resigned in 2012. While employed with the agency, Strange says Johnson wrote 280 checks to pay expenses for herself, relatives and friends. Strange says Johnson also altered bank statements to make the payments look legitimate.

Johnson was sentenced to 32 months in prison, but her term was suspended for five years of supervised probation. Johnson is ordered to pay $75,000 in restitution to the agency and more than $263,500 to the agency's insurance company.
