The Escambia County Basketball Team has faced adversity all season long, trailing several games in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils have counted on their superior conditioning to make the difference, and that proved to be the case again on Thursday.
Escambia County forced a flurry of late turnovers, outscoring Charles Henderson 10-2 in the final two minutes to beat the Trojans 50-44 in a 4A South Regional Semifinal contest at the Dothan Civic Center. With the win, the Blue Devils advanced to face Wilcox Central in the Regional Final on Saturday.
After navigating the press for most of the day, the Trojans crumbled down the stretch, committing costly turnovers that led directly to Blue Devils baskets.
Darius McCarthy and Fred Knight each converted and-one opportunities in the final two minutes, with Desmond Williams and Tyrell Ford scoring in the lane as well to complete the comeback.
This was a close game throughout, as the teams were tied at 18 at halftime. Escambia County led by one point heading to the fourth quarter, but the Trojans built a four-point lead in the final period before the Blue Devils rallied for the win.
Williams led all scorers with 19 points and Knight added 14 for the Blue Devils.
Tyler Mitchell had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Trojans and Davantez Jackson added 10 points. Charles Henderson ends the year with a 19-7 record.
