THIS YEAR, ELBA IS ONE OF 28 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN ALABAMA IN A PROGRAM TO PROVIDE "FREE" BREAKFASTS AND LUNCHES TO "ALL" THEIR STUDENTS.
THE FEDERAL HEALTHY-HUNGER FREE ACT IS DESIGNED FOR THOSE SYSTEMS WITH AT LEAST 40-PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS ON "FREE" LUNCHES. IN ELBA'S CASE, NEARLY 80-PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS QUALFIED. PARENTS BELIEVE EATING "FREE" ELIMINATES THE SOCIAL STIGMA OF STUDENTS GETTING FREE MEALS BECAUSE THEY'RE POOR. IN THE WIREGRASS,THE BARBOUR COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ALSO QUALIFIES FOR THE FEDERAL PROGRAM….
