Dothan City Leaders want to Oppose a House & Senate Bill

Dothan city leaders want to stay in control of how they handle business licenses with apartment complexes.

Officials say they don't want the city to be a part of passing 2 bills.

They would prohibit the imposition of a business license tax on the rental or residential real estate on a per-unit basis unless the tax was imposed before January of this year.

Leaders say the bills are an intrusion on the authority of local governments.

"Although we're grandfathered in we want to join all the other cities and say let us decide how we do our business fees in our own communities," said Mayor Mike Schmitz.

The city will submit a letter of opposition to the state legislature.
