Dothan Animal Shelter Full to Capacity

DOTHAN, AL--For the last four years Diana Noe has volunteered at the Dothan Animal Shelter.

"I make sure that they're clean and fed and i medicate them when they're sick, wipe their little eyes blow their little noses," explained Diana Noe.

And the amount of noses she's blowing is increasing.

"They're coming in daily," said Sgt. Adriane Woodruff.

They meaning stray cats and dogs.

"We got a lot of animals that are out here right now, both dogs and cats we're looking at about 200 in inventory right now," said Sgt. Woodruff.

Sgt. Woodruff says the influx is due to kitten and puppy season and with so many coming in, lots need to go out.

"Adoptions have been a little slow lately so we're asking that the public come out and see what we got."

Right now you can either adopt a dog or cat for 15 dollars, but in a few weeks that price will change.

"As soon as we get the software it will go up, our adoption fees have been raised from 15 to 25 dollars, but that also covers micro chipping on every animal that's adopted," added Woodruff.

Diana says she'd love to see more go to good homes.

"Every now and then you have a little heart break, the animals don't get adopted a lot of times the way they should or as quickly as they could."

That heart break comes because the animals can only be kept for 20 days then they're put down.

If you don't want to adopt, there are other options.

You can open your home and become a foster parent.

If you're interested in adopting or foster parenting, stop by or give the shelter a call at 334-615-4620.
