Don't Scrimp on Nutrition

It’s important to take care of your home, but what about how you stock it? Organic or not? In other words, pricey or cheap? When it comes to your health, you should splurge.

Karisa Drake, a Dothan resident, said her doctor told her to keep an eye on her health.

“I have a family history of heart disease and I know it's important but I don't stick with it. I do it for a little bit and then I fall off the wagon,” she explained.

Nobody wants to give away their money, but you should not scrimp on nutrition. Registered dietitian DesaRee Frazier said too many additives and pesticides cannot be good for you.

She said, “The reason people prefer organic is because they don't use pesticides in organic foods."

A crate of cage-free eggs costs $3.99. A crate of regular eggs costs $2.89. Save a dollar now and miss out on something priceless.

“It's just a little bit more than regular eggs so we'll try to go ahead and support the cage-free and do as much hormone free as you can,” said Rachael Veale, a Dothan resident.

Frazier said one study found cage-free eggs had less cholesterol than regular eggs. However, be mindful of ingredients—just because something says natural, does not mean it is organic. Marinated or "enhanced" chicken has almost tripled the amount of sodium and added preservatives.

“We always stress that you read the labels for yourself. It shouldn't list whether it had any antibiotics or any extra sodium. They both look like fresh chicken, but you’re not going to know the difference,” explained Frazier.

Stretching a dollar at the grocery store now, will benefit you in the future—think of it as an investment in your health. Unfortunately, the healthier it is for you, the more you pay.

“I was looking at the apples and there was one kind that was $2.68 a pound, which was outrageous,” expressed Drake.

Yet, if you scrimp on nutrition, Frazier said with that may come diabetes, heart disease, and many other health problems. Dieticians recommend only two egg yolks a week and if you eat a certain food frequently, you should buy it organic.
