In a few years senior citizens will have a new living option in Dothan.

Tuesday, with a 6 to 1 vote, city commissioners decided to turn over the old Howell School building on Burdeshaw Street to the Dothan Downtown Redevelopment Authority.

City leaders say the building is a surplus and is no longer needed for public or municipal purposes.

DDRA officials say the building will be used for a senior living facility.

"It's going to be a great architectural piece, it's going to have great senior services as part of it and we're excited to see it come into fruition," said DDRA President Jansen Tidmore.

Construction is set to begin in January 2015.
