Crash of Tanker Truck in Ala. Forces I-85 Detours

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) -- Police in Opelika say a crash forced them to shut down 2 miles of Interstate 85 overnight while crews worked to clean up after a tanker truck carrying chemicals overturned.

Authorities say the crash happened at about 11 p.m. Friday when a Buick Lacrosse crashed into the median railing on I-85 and came to rest in a northbound lane. The driver got out the car, but a tanker truck crashed into the vehicle, causing the tanker to overturn at the median with its cab in a southbound lane.

Police say the tanker driver was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

The tanker was carrying an industrial chemical and cleanup crews had to spend hours at the scene and the roadway remained closed into Saturday morning.
