Chipley, FL- The massive Rhythm development in Washington County made it one step closer Thursday to becoming a reality.

After years of delays, Washington County commissioners were finally ready to make a decision. They voted four to one in favor of the development.

"We've been at this for over four years. We're very happy to see we've finally gotten approval," said Developer J. Scott Henderson.

But not everyone was as happy as Henderson.

"What was your reaction to the vote today?," asked News Channel 7's Bryan Anderson.

"Very upset. I really wish the county commission had listened to us," said Washington County resident Nan Thompson.

The plans call to develop three square miles on the Bay and Washington County line. There will be up to 3,200 homes and thousands of square feet in retail and office space.

Commissioner Charles Brock, who voted against the proposal, said he thinks that's too much.

"I know we need growth, but we need slow growth," said Brock.

Henderson begged to differ.

"I believe that the market is strong. I think that there's demonstration that the retirement community age group is one of the strongest in the state of Florida," said Henderson.

The Rhythm development decision will now head to the state's Department of Economic Opportunity for a review. Residents also have thirty days to contest the vote.
