OZARK--Technology can fail at any given time and when it comes to safety, having a back-up plan or in this case, a personal back-up alert system is crucial.

There are 18 outdoor emergency warning sirens across Dale County but a recent test has uncovered a problem.

"We got some reports from our last test on Saturday that a few of them didn't sound," said Dale County EMA Director Robert Marsh.

EMA Director Robert Marsh says he's not sure how many didn't sound but he can only account for a handful that are in working order .

"Out of the 18 sirens I got notifications on 5 of those."

Marsh says all of the sirens check out on the silent test but that doesn't mean they're actually working and he relies on the public to verify their status.

"Usually the Volunteer Fire Departments are pretty good about letting me know when their's go off."

Marsh says not only is having sirens that don't work, a problem, but finding money in the budget to have those repaired is even bigger.

"All of our budgets are kind-of tight this year, it's kind of hard to pay this."

Before a technician can be called, the sirens that aren't working must be identified and that may take a while, so there are some ways residents can help.

"if you do hear your sirens give my office a call."

Marsh went on to say residents can rest assured to some extent, because on Wednesday agents from the Weather Service examined the facility and declared Dale County "storm ready" for the next five years.

If you don't have a back-up alert system you can purchase a weather radio or you can download the 4 Warn Desktop Alert.
