Complaints Lead to New Student Enrollment Form

Students in Alabama do not need a social security number or birth certificate to enroll in classes.

Superintendent Tommy Bice sent all public school systems a memo on the issue.

The Southern Poverty Law Center had complained that more than 70 percent of schools in the state were using enrollment practices that violated federal prohibitions against denying or discouraging immigrant students. Many previous forms required social security numbers of birth certificates.
