It's a feud that's been going on for the past year.
And now citizens are weighing in.
"She’s the mayor; she has to sign the grants
He's chief and he's got to keep up with the grants
This administration has been so sloppy."
The mayor and police chief of Columbia, Alabama, haven't agreed on many things.
Tuesday's press conference further illustrates their lengthy conflict.
“ADECA is requesting reimbursement for 3790 and 93 cents.” Columbia mayor Sandra Lovett said.
The town of Columbia got an ADECA grant to help pay for officers' overtime.
But according to mayor Lovett ...
“There were some figures that were just not looking right.”
That's why she ordered an audit.
The audit determined that certain required paperwork had gone missing.
“The time sheets didn’t provide verification of the dates or hours worked.
Couldn’t provide the backup documentation for the grants submitted.” Lovett said.
While mayor Lovett blames the police chief, the chief says it's not his fault.
He says the paperwork required for the grant had been filed in his cabinet.
“The mayor has taken it upon herself and has not notified the council and she changed the locks on the police department.” Columbia police Chief Floyd said.
He said only the mayor and his one officer had a key to the building.
“During the 3 weeks I was suspended. My officer called me and said things were disarray in my office.” Floyd said.
The chief believes someone came in and took the paperwork from his office.
Chief Floyd didn't rule the mayor out.
“The 2011 2012 files were missing.”
But whoever the blame shifts to, the responsibility lies with both the mayor and chief.
“The mayor was responsible just like i was for having copies of the paperwork.” Floyd said.
In the end, it's the town that has to pay back more than three thousand dollars.
In the meantime, Chief Floyd says he's trying to figure out how to verify the overtime hours his employees worked.
Mayor Lovett will be giving up her title as mayor in four days.
But she says she'll still support the town.
Chief Floyd says he's going to try hard to get the missing documents back to the auditor.
