(AP) -- It's getting to be a tradition at Notre Dame --knocking off a No. 1-ranked basketball team at home.
Notre Dame upset undefeated and top-ranked Syracuse 67-58,
igniting a wild on-court celebration by Irish fans at center court.
It's happened before. It's the eighth time Notre Dame has beaten a
No. 1-ranked team, dating back to when the Irish ended UCLA's
88-game winning streak in 1974 when Digger Phelps was their coach.
Notre Dame, which is 12-8, led this one by as many as 18. Jack
Cooley led the Irish with 17 points and 10 rebounds and was a force
inside.
Syracuse big man Fab Melo did not make the trip to South Bend.
Melo had started all 20 of the Orange's first games, was their
leading rebounder with 5.7 a game, averaged 7.2 points and three
blocks. School officials gave no explanation why the talented
center did not make the trip. He will also miss Monday's game
against Cincinnati.
Syracuse is 20-1. The Orange loss leaves only 12th-ranked Murray
State undefeated in men's Division 1 play.
----The Racers beat SIU-Edwardsville 82-65 to improve to 20-0.
Isaiah Canaan (kah-NAHN') led the races with 21. Jewuan Long added a season-high 17. Murray State is 9-0 on the road.
