Coffee County Walks for a Cure

Enterprise, AL - Riley Stewart is a spunky 7 year old. She's also cancer survivor.

“July will be two years cancer free,” said her mom Cathy Stewart.

Her team joined about forty others for Coffee County's Relay for Life Friday night.

“Event of fellowship. Event of leaning on one another. Supporting one another,” said Stewart.

The night kicked off with cheers as survivors took the first lap around the track.

“It's very emotional but it's motivational. Makes you want to give and continue to give. Especially when you those who have survived and come through a terrible time. Makes you know what you're doing is really paying off,” said Tony Barnes.

But many people were there to remember those who lost their battle. They're fighting back with nearly $190,000 to fund cancer research. Leaders hope to ultimately raise more than $200,000.

“I just wouldn't miss it. It's a daily prayer of mine that there is a cure for cancer. When you have it affect your family like it has mine that's not a hope you're willing to give up,” said Kristen Green.

“You hear about relay for life and things like that, but when it hits close to home and you see a friend struggle with it, it’s hits you too,” said Lydia Townsend.

“You have no idea until 9 p.m. when everyone of these luminaries are lit up and then it really hits home to you that it's not just our little girl who has been affected it’s a community who is supporting so many people,” said Stewart. “There's not a person we know who hasn't been touched by cancer so yes we will continue to help with the fight.”

And they are happy their daughter is here to help in that fight.
