Circle City Fights Childhood Obesity

Kids from across the Wiregrass laced up their sneakers for a run Saturday morning.

It was the second annual Mayor’s Cross Country Championships at Westgate Park in Dothan. .

Kids from kindergarten through 8th grade ran and jumped all morning long.

While the kids were vying for the title of all city performer, leaders say they were also fighting childhood obesity.

“We feel like getting children interested in events like this help promotes fitness for them, and it's a fun thing. It's fun for kids they have a great time,” said Larry Patrick with Dothan Leisure Services.

“We are definitely on the same team. So I think it's just going to be a tie,” said Hidden Lake student Jason Thomas.

“Oh I practiced! I can jump over a 50 feet bench,” said Conner Henexson, Montana Magnet student.

The school with the most runners won the coveted mayor's cup.
