Cause of Dalton Chemical Plant Explosion Under Investigation

ATLANTA (AP) -- Investigators are trying to determine what caused a leak at a Dalton chemical plant that injured two workers.

Dalton Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield said the accident happened Monday morning at a plant owned by MFG Chemical Inc.

A worker was adding a chemical to tank, which triggered a reaction that produced vapor. Satterfield said the vapor escaped before the worker could shut a lid. That worker apparently inhaled the vapor and was flown by helicopter to a burn center in Augusta.

A second worker suffered less-serious injuries.

Company officials said the release was contained to the plant, but Satterfield said some vapor may have escaped the site.

Fire officials briefly advised residents of a nearby apartment complex to stay inside. That precaution was later lifted.
