MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama's dry weather has prompted the U.S. Forest Service to ban the use of campfires in Alabama's four national forests except in developed recreation sites.
Forest Supervisor Steve Lohr said the restrictions apply to the Bankhead, Conecuh, Talladega and Tuskegee national forests. He said fireworks are also banned throughout the national forests, including developed recreation sites.
He said the restrictions will remain in effect until Aug. 31, unless weather conditions indicate otherwise. Anyone violating the restrictions could be fined up to $5,000.
