BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) -- The hunt for a former Los Angeles police officer suspected in three killings continues in snow-covered mountains.
Meanwhile, the LAPD's chief says he will reopen the disciplinary case that led to the fugitive's firing.
Police Chief Charlie Beck says officials in particular will re-examine the allegations by Christopher Dorner that his law enforcement career was undone by racist colleagues. While he promises to hear out Dorner if he surrenders, Beck stresses that he is ordering a review of his 2007 case because he takes the allegation of racism in his department seriously.
In a statement, the chief says "I do this not to appease a murderer. I do it to reassure the public that their police department is transparent and fair in all the things we do."
Authorities suspect Dorner in a series of attacks in Southern California over the past week that left three people dead, including a police officer. Authorities say he has vowed revenge against several former LAPD colleagues whom he blames for ending his career. Beck says the killings and threats that Dorner allegedly made in an online rant have led police to provide protection to 50 families.
BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) -- A law enforcement officer says authorities found weapons in the burned-out pickup truck of the former Los Angeles police officer who's wanted in three killings.
The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
The truck was found Thursday in the San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear Lake, spurring a massive manhunt for Christopher Dorner in the snowy mountains.
Investigators have been examining the truck to determine if it broke down or was set ablaze as a diversion. Police say the truck had a broken axle. Investigators are trying to determine whether it was already broken when they found it, or whether it was damaged when it was towed away.
(AP) -- A mother and daughter newspaper delivery team who were mistakenly shot by Los Angeles police hunting for a fugitive former cop will get a new pickup truck courtesy of the department.
LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith says the department's Chief Charlie Beck met with the women in their Torrance home Saturday to apologize and tell them he had arranged for someone to donate a new pickup truck.
The truck will be donated early this week, Smith said.
The women were accidentally struck by gunfire in the pre-dawn hours Thursday after it was reported that Christopher Dorner was sighted in the area. Beck called it a case of mistaken identity.
Dorner has vowed to avenge his firing from the department, which he wrote in an online manifesto was retaliation for reporting officer violence.
