COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- Workers plan to place a 150-foot steel
bridge from Columbus to an island in the Chattahoochee River.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/n8LT5C) that
the bridge will take spectators from the riverbank to the island,
where they can get an up-close view of the whitewater rafting
course.

The island is home to the old Eagle and Phenix powerhouse. Mat
Swift, president of the W.C. Bradley Co. that owns the powerhouse
property, said the island will be the prime viewing spot for
whitewater spectators.

Swift tells the Ledger-Enquirer that the site will become "the
50-yard line" for spectators watching people navigate the
whitewater on the Chattahoochee.

The whitewater course is expected to boost tourism in the
Columbus and Phenix City, Ala., areas when it opens in two years.
