Blood Drives Canceled Due to Sandy

Some 300 American Red Cross blood drives have been canceled because of what was Hurricane Sandy.

The organization says the cancellations mean more than 9,000 blood and platelet donations across 14 states didn't happen.

You can also make monetary donations by texting the words "Red Cross" to 90999. $10 will be added to your next cell phone bill.

Blood and blood products were moved to areas threatened by the storm before it hit, but red cross officials say they expect the impact of power outages and the canceled drives to be significant.

On average 44,000 blood donations are needed every day.
