“We are taking out the whole blood but we are also giving the red blood cells back with fluids so your body really isn’t loosing that fluid content.” Holland said.

During the holidays, the need for blood donations is always high, but so is the need for platelets.
And officials say right now is the perfect time to donate.

Roger Arnold has been giving blood since he was eighteen.
And just recently he found out about donating his platelets.

“They asked me if I would like to give platelets and I said well sure. And they explained to me what platelets does for the community and everything and to people who really need it.” Donor Roger Arnold said.

Now Arnold donates his platelets multiple times a year.
A single platelet donation can help multiple people.
Officials say during this time of year, donations are needed the most.

“Specifically with the upcoming holiday with the new years, we have more people out on the road, and unfortunately with more travel more people on the road, we have more accidents.” Lifesouth Community Blood Center official Beverly Holland said.

Holland says if you do want to donate, it takes one to two hours.
And when you're done, she says you won't feel light-headed like when you give blood.

“We are taking out the whole blood but we are also giving the red blood cells back with fluids so your body really isn’t loosing that fluid content.” Holland said.

And donors like Arnold say the hour is worth it.

“It comes back to our hospitals it’s a local deal, it comes back to flowers hospital, southeast Alabama and it saves lives.” Arnold said.

Arnold says it's his way of paying it forward.

“That’s what I try to do is give back to the community, and it’s a small way but its giving back.
Holland says after you donate platelets, you shouldn't lift anything heavy for a day, drink plenty of fluids, and eat a good meal.” Arnold said.
