Bay Co. Horse Infected with Eastern Equine Encephalytis

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) -- The Bay County Health Department is asking residents to guard against mosquito bites after a horse was confirmed to have a mosquito-transmitted disease.

Health officials say the horse was found to be infected with Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) earlier this month. The rare disease is caused by a virus that can be spread to humans by mosquitoes. Officials say EEE can cause inflammation of the brain.

It is the second case of the virus reported in Bay County this year.

Symptoms of the virus may include fever, headache, fatigue, dizziness and confusion.
