MIDLAND CITY -- Shirley Jackson remembers her husband, Billy Ray Jackson, as an endearing person who would help out anyone.

According to officials, Billy Ray Jackson was found murdered in his Midland City home on September 3, 2005. The alleged attacker was 57 year old Frederick Bernard Hightower.

Police arrested Hightower on May 9th and charged him with Capital Murder. He is currently held at the Dale County Jail on no bond.

Jackson said that the wait for an arrest was well worth it.

"Four more months in September and it would have been nine years," Jackson said. "I said, 'Oh Lord, looky here, justice is about to be served."

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said the reason this case has taken nearly a decade to make an arrest is because they must cover all their bases in making a case.

"Usually when you take somebody to trial, you only get one chance," Sheriff Olson said. "So, what you have to do is work the best you possibly can and collect as much evidence as you possibly can."

Sheriff Olson said they never abandon a case.

"You want to be able to bring closure to the families," Sheriff Olson said. "A lot of people feel that often it's your cold cases that go unworked, and this is just an example of how that's not true. We never forget the cases we have and continue to work.

On May 9, 2014 The U.S Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and Investigators with the Dale County Sheriff's Office arrested Frederick Bernard Hightower and charged him with Capital Murder in the 2005 death of Billy Ray Jackson.

Since 2005 Investigators with the Sheriff's Office and other local and state agencies have worked diligently to find witnesses and gather information that would lead to the arrest of Jackson's killer. Due to this being an ongoing investigation limited information will be released but based on the evidence and information we have obtained we believe the motive behind the murder was robbery.

Hightower is being held at the Dale County Jail under no bond at this time.
On Sept. 3 of 2005, 72-year-old Billy Ray Jackson of Dale County was found stabbed to death at his residence on Friar Road in Midland City.

He was found in his living room with multiple stab wounds to the chest and he was also brutally beaten.
