At least 20 people have been taken to hospital after tornadoes caused damage to several towns in the northeastern part of the Australian state of Victoria, local media said.

Local television reported the towns of Yarrawonga, Bundalong, Barooga, and Rutherglen were hit by two tornadoes, leaving two people in a critical condition.

"I actually understand now how everybody feels when it happens to the people you see on television. It's awful," said Lauren Fogerty from Bundalong.

Some of the injured were airlifted to hospital in Melbourne, a police spokesman said.

The State Emergency Service received more than 150 calls for help in the region overnight on Thursday (March 21), local media said.

Initial reports suggested the tornados packed winds between 180 (111 miles) and 250km/h (155 miles), local media said.

A weather forecaster at the State Control Centre was reported as saying tornadoes of such force were quite rare in Victoria.
