HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - The April 28-29 tornado outbreak is now tied the fourth-largest in state history after the National Weather Service forecasting office in Huntsville identified three new tornado tracks Thursday in DeKalb County.

According to preliminary weather service storm surveys, 24 tornadoes touched down throughout central and northern Alabama on April 28 and into the wee hours of April 29. The outbreak matches the 24 tornadoes that touched down on April 8, 2006.

Two people were killed in Alabama in Limestone County by the tornadoes while a University of Alabama student died during the same event in a severe storm not classified as a tornado.

Tornado records date to 1950 when the National Weather Service began keeping statistics on tornadoes.
