An Opp police officer found an unexpected visitor lurking near the student bus drop-off point at the elementary school on his nightly patrol rounds.
Police Chief Mike McDonald estimates the alligator was a little more than 5-feet long.
Officers tried to catch and relocate the gator at first, but the reptile continually charged at them, and the decision was made to destroy it.
Authorities didn't want to risk the gator getting free with children coming to school in a few hours.
