BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Alabamians have been crossing over state lines in hopes of winning the record $540 million on the line in Friday's Mega Millions lottery drawing.
Olen Averette of Cottondale, Ala. tells WBRC-TV (http://bit.ly/HnMcGZ ) that he crosses the Alabama state line into Georgia for lottery tickets when the jackpot reaches more than $200 million.
Averette and two companions say they bought $500 worth of lottery tickets at a Pilot convenience store in Georgia.
Alabama does not have a state lottery, and tickets cannot be purchased within state lines.
The cash payout for the $540 million Friday night drawing would be about $359 million. That would pay out an estimated $230 million after taxes.
