It's the first event of its kind in Alabama.

For staff participating in "Alabama Gives Day" it's one of the most crucial fundraisers for non-profit organizations.

"There's no reason people can't give a $10 donation to their charity, just go on the computer and click it and do it," said Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Sherryl Walker.

Many organizations like the Advocacy Center depend heavily on donations.

“We depend on the generosity of the community to provide free services to children who are sexually abused,” said Walker.

The economy is slowly rebounding and each of these agencies has experienced a tight budget with grants slowly drying up.

Nearly 1-third of walker's budget comes from fundraisers and events like this.

But many people wonder where the money is going.

"[It’s going towards] different social programs that will lead to public safety, public health, and economic development," said Community Career Development & Parent Project Coordinator Lawrence Keener.

Alfred Saliba Family Services Center provides several programs for the less fortunate.

"95% of our services we provide care for people who live below the poverty level," said Keener.

Keener and staff are doing a lot to help.

What's unique about this event is people get a chance to donate to their favorite nonprofit while learning about other agencies.

"We feel the gap for what other government agencies aren't able to do,” said Pamela Miles.

Miles is the Executive Director for the Exchange Center for Child Abuse Prevention; she says "Alabama Gives" is a great opportunity for networking.

"If I have families that come into my center who need services, I can have other services to refer to."
