JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- Leaders of an eastern Alabama city have approved of outfitting police officers with wearable cameras.

Jacksonville City Council voted Monday to buy 23 cameras for the city's police department. The vote also authorizes Mayor Johnny Smith to sign a three-year contract with the camera manufacturer to store video footage on a computer server for just over $5,300 annually.

Reports say Police Chief Tommy Thompson says he thinks the measure will protect citizens as well as police. Council President Mark Jones said the cameras will help add a measure of accountability to Jacksonville police and will make it easier to determine when accusations against officers have merit.
