Alabama Senate Works Despite Icy Weather

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The Alabama House was unable to meet Tuesday because many members couldn't make the icy trip to Montgomery. But the Senate got enough members to Montgomery to meet.

The Senate gave final approval to a bill that moves up Alabama's deadline for Democratic and Republican candidates to sign up for elections by about two months. The bill is the result of an agreement between the state government and the U.S. Justice Department to make sure absentee ballots get to the military and other Alabamians overseas in time to be counted in elections. The bill now goes to the governor for signing into law.

The Senate also passed a bill to require all county circuit clerks' offices to take credit and debit cards. The bill now goes to the House.
