Alabama National Guard Will Grant Same-Sex Benefits, Other States Refuse

By  |

The Alabama National Guard is one of the few southern states abiding by the Pentagon’s new policy extending benefits to same sex couples.

Guards from Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana say they will not abide by the new regulations. Alabama is one of 37 states to define marriage as between a man and a woman. As of last week, no applications had been filed for the benefits.

Military personnel in the state will be given up to 10 days of leave to travel to another state to be legally married.
