UPDATE: Alabama Senate Passes Medical Marijuana Bill

The Alabama Senate has passed the marijuana oil bill sought by families who want the oil as a treatment for their children's seizure disorders.

It will now move to the Gov. Bentley office for a signature.

The bill would fund a $1 million University of Alabama at Birmingham study on the effectiveness of using cannabidiol to control seizures.

The Alabama House of Representatives approved the legislation on a 97-0 vote early Thursday morning.

Republican Rep. Allen Farley he was overjoyed after working on the issue all session.

The oil does not get users high and anecdotal evidence suggests it is an effective treatment for seizure disorders. However, its possession has been illegal.

Farley said the families plan to travel to Montgomery to hopefully watch the Alabama Senate give the bill final passage on Thursday.

The study bill was a compromise after an initial version, which would have decriminalized possession of the oil, hit stumbling blocks.
