Ala to Keep Limited Snow Equipment After Storm

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- The state of Alabama probably isn't shopping for snow plows despite last week's winter storm.

The Alabama Department of Transportation says it already has trucks, snowplows and equipment to spread sand and salt water, and purchasing many more doesn't make much sense.

A spokesman for the agency, Tony Harris, says the equipment isn't used very often, and the cost of additional machinery outweighs the benefit.

He says some equipment purchased after the 1993 blizzard had to be replaced it went so long without being used.

Before last week's storm, the last major traffic problem linked to snow and ice happened a year ago in north Alabama.
