MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama Department of Public Health officials say the state was one of two where hospital patients' infection rates were lower than the national average.

Officials said in a statement Wednesday that a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report mentioned that infection rates among Alabama hospital patients were lower in three of four categories than the national rate.

State Health Officer Dr. Donald Wilson says the department began examining infection rates at the state level in 2011 and has seen significant progress in reducing infections.

Alabama performed better than the national average in catheter-associated urinary tract infections and infections associated with colon surgeries and abdominal hysterectomies.

President of the Alabama Hospital Association J. Michael Horsley says infection prevention has been an ongoing priority.
